About IWC Watches
A short history of IWC
IWC was founded in Schaffhausen in 1868 by an American engineer, Florentine Ariosto Jones, who wanted to combine Swiss craftsmanship with American manufacturing methods. The Mark series of pilot watches, developed to military specification, established the legibility-first design language that still defines the brand, including the soft-iron inner cage that shields the movement from magnetic fields.
Which IWC model should you buy?
The Pilot’s Watch range runs from the restrained Mark XX to the 46mm Big Pilot with its oversized conical crown. The Portugieser, originally built around a pocket-watch movement, is the elegant option with long, slim hands and a railway-track minute chapter. Portofino is the pared-back dress line, and the Aquatimer handles diving. Sizing matters more with IWC than most brands, since several references wear genuinely large.

Buying IWC pre-owned
IWC sits between accessible Swiss brands and the haute horlogerie tier, offering in-house calibres such as the 52000 series with seven-day power reserves and Pellaton winding. Depreciation from retail is steeper than Rolex or Patek Philippe, which makes pre-owned IWC one of the more compelling ways to acquire a genuinely sophisticated in-house movement at a moderate price.
We currently have 24 IWC watches in stock (24 pre-owned), ranging from $2,195 to $20,995. Every watch is inspected and certified by our specialists before it is listed, and is covered by our authenticity guarantee and 2-year warranty, with free insured worldwide shipping. New to the secondary market? Start with our guide to buying a pre-owned luxury watch.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm whether the movement is in-house (52000/89000 series) or a modified base calibre.
- Measure the lug-to-lug distance, not just case diameter — IWC pilot watches wear large.
- Check the soft-iron cage is intact if antimagnetic performance matters to you.
- Inspect the leather strap and deployant; IWC replacements are relatively expensive.
If anything about a listing is unclear, speak to a specialist before you commit — we would rather answer questions than process a return. You can also read how we authenticate every watch we sell, or browse the full index of watches in stock.
