A short history of Panerai

Panerai began in Florence in 1860 as a supplier of precision instruments, and from the 1930s built luminous dive watches for the frogmen of the Italian Royal Navy. Those watches were classified military equipment, not consumer products — which is why the cushion case, sandwich dial and Luminor crown-protecting bridge look like nothing else. The brand only sold to the public from 1993.

Which Panerai model should you buy?

The Luminor is defined by its crown-protecting lever bridge and cushion case, typically 44mm. The Radiomir is the earlier, cleaner design with wire lugs and no crown guard, and generally wears more comfortably. The Submersible is the modern dive specialist with a rotating bezel and higher water resistance. Panerai wears large by design, so the 42mm and 44mm distinction is worth taking seriously before buying.

• Check whether the movement is in-house (P. series) or an older ETA/Unitas base.
• Test the crown-protecting lever on Luminor models for firm, positive engagement.
• Inspect the sandwich dial for even lume color through both layers.
• Try the case on if possible — 44mm Panerai wears larger than the number suggests.
