The Universal Genève Polarouter reference 20214 was introduced in 1954 to commemorate Scandinavian Airlines System’s pioneering polar flights between Europe and North America. Designed by a young Gérald Genta—long before his famed creations for Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe—the Polarouter was conceived as both a pilot’s tool and a symbol of modern aviation. The reference 20214 was among the early production models, typically housed in a 34–35 mm gold-capped stainless-steel case with lyre-shaped lugs and a clean, mid-century dial design featuring applied hour markers and dauphine hands. Powered by Universal Genève’s automatic caliber 138SS bumper movement, it offered dependable performance while maintaining a slim, elegant profile. Early examples bore the “Polarouter” name, which was soon changed to “Polerouter” in subsequent iterations. Today, the Polarouter 20214 holds a special place in watch history—not only for its connection to SAS’s polar route achievement, but also as one of Gérald Genta’s earliest professional designs.
