The brand often looks to the natural world around its Japanese studios for inspiration, and this model reflects Shubun, the autumnal equinox. The dial is meant to evoke a moonlit fall sky, what the Japanese call tsukiyo, with a textured surface that suggests clouds drifting across the night as they pass in front of a bright autumn moon. Depending on the light, the dial shifts subtly in tone and shimmer, which is exactly the kind of quiet detail Grand Seiko is known for. The case design draws from the historic 62GS, introduced in 1967 as Grand Seiko’s first automatic watch. Its signature feature was a bezel-free construction that allowed for a wider dial opening and sharply polished, multi-faceted surfaces. That architecture carries over here, giving the watch a crisp, reflective look from different angles. Inside beats the Hi-Beat caliber 9S85, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour and built at the Shizukuishi studio in northern Japan.Authenticity
